PEANUT ISLAND - ISLAND ACTIVATION
When JTRG decided to conduct a DXpedition to Peanut Island, one of
the first goals was to have the island activated as an official
US Island for the radio community.
Graham Huls-KE4WBO started submitting the necessary paperwork in
early March. As part of the requirements, it is necessary to visit the
candidate island and establish a minimum of 25 QSOs with at least 2 DXCC
countries.
On June 13, 2009, the following JTRG members, Albert Moreschi-AG4BV,
Michael Alauskas III-AJ4PN, and Kevin Jackson-W4JKJ visited the island
to do the qualifications. We had a TS2000, G5RV and Buddipole. We
encountered very poor DX conditions and were making very few contacts.
It didn't take long before we relocated and moved the G5RV to the
3rd-floor railing of the house and created a sloper and mounted the
Buddipole to the widow's walk. Island, the dream has now come true.
Although a little challenging, Peanut Island is now officially
FL479S after qualifying with 35 contacts including 4 DXCC countries.
Congratulations to all!
